Hi everyone and welcome to this very first issue of Analysis & Academic, a weekly curation of recently-published op-eds, analyses and academic articles focused on the war in Ukraine. I drew a complete blank on the name, do reach out if you have a better one in mind—I’ll throw in a one-year subscription for the best one.
Because it is a whole lot more than a single article, I want to start by highlighting right here “Ukraine’s Many Faces”, an incredible, 400 pages, open-access collection of analyses, articles and primary documents on Ukraine’s history and its people. It is absolutely filled to the brim with fascinating articles, to the point that it’s hard for me to recommend any particular one (but I have a soft spot for “Street Children in Early Soviet Odesa”, what a great topic). Definitely check it out.
This first issue is packed with great pieces, from Bruno Tertrais’ deep dive into security guarantees to François Heisbourg’s thought-provoking look at the early days of West Germany as a potential lesson for Ukraine. Several investigations on Russia’s abduction of Ukrainian children have been published recently, making Yulia Ioffe’s latest article in the Journal of Genocide Research all the more timely. And though it’s unfortunately one of just two academic articles featured in this issue that isn’t open access, Volodymyr Kulyk’s article on changes to Ukrainian identity is a fantastic read, both on what has already happened before the Russian invasion and as a first look into how that invasion might transform Ukrainian identity.
I think that’s about it. Just like “Ukrainian Pulse”, “Analysis & Academic” will in the future only be available to paid subscribers. If you want more of this, please consider subscribing!
